Apportation is a spell that retrieves ground objects from a selected square without moving the caster onto it. It is useful for recovering loot across dangerous terrain, but does not take possessions directly from a living monster.[1]
Learning
The Thieves' Guild teaches apportation on promotion from Thief to Master Thief, requiring at least 4,000 thieves' guild XP. Turning in the Justiciar's Badge is the later Shadowlord promotion, not a requirement for this spell.[2]
It can also be learned through random research, a Knowledge wish that selects it, or using identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
The initial cost is 15 mana. Choose a square with the targeting cursor, then accept or refuse the pickup offer for each object there. Refused objects stay at that square. The spell makes no separate distance, line-of-sight or projectile-path check, and you remain on your original square.[4]
The usual inventory or pack handling follows each accepted pickup, and money is added to your cash. A ground pile under a creature is eligible; the creature's own inventory is not. An empty target square, or refusing every offer, still costs the spell's mana.[5]
If you decide not to cast, cancel at spell selection. Escape at the later targeting prompt is not checked before this effect accesses the selected square. Source review identifies an invalid-coordinate risk; the outcome of that cancellation has not been established through gameplay. Declining the subsequent pickup offers is a different operation.[6]
Strategy
Combine object detection with apportation to locate and recover loot without walking through an enemy or onto a trap. This can retrieve items dropped by frightened monsters or by a killed thief; pickpocketing is the separate option for possessions that have not reached the ground.
At its initial cost, repeated retrievals are more economical when several useful objects share a square. Plan where to carry them before accepting the offers: remote pickup does not remove inventory management. A noncursed rod of apportation performs the same retrieval using a charge instead of mana, making it an alternative when the spell is unknown or mana is needed for another purpose.
