Return is a delayed travel spell. Within the current dungeon it connects the first floor with the deepest floor explored; if it finishes after you have reached the countryside, it instead brings you back outside Rampart. It is not an immediate escape from combat.[1][2]

Learning

Join the Rampart Explorers' Club at character level 2 or higher and pay 100 Au to learn Return immediately. This is a predictable source that does not require joining a profession or religion.[3]

Return is also in the random research pool, can be selected by a Knowledge wish, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[4]

Effects

The initial cost is 10 mana. Casting starts a countdown, replacing any previous Return countdown. Its length is set by the location where you cast; the destination is decided by where you are when it finishes.[1][5]

Location when the spell finishes Destination
Current dungeon, below floor 1 Floor 1 of that dungeon
Current dungeon, floor 1 Deepest floor explored in that dungeon
Countryside World coordinates (27, 19), outside Rampart
Other local scene No travel effect

The countryside command set does not accept the casting command. To use the homeward branch, start Return in a local scene and reach the countryside before the countdown expires. Casting directly on the world map is not an available shortcut.[2][6]

Charging time

Within the current dungeon, the countdown depends on its depth d and dungeon type:

Dungeon Countdown units
Goblin Caves 1 + floor(d / 3)
Sewers 3 + floor(d / 6)
Archmage's Castle 4 + floor(d / 4)
Volcano 5 + floor(d / 4)

Outside the current dungeon, casting sets one unit. Each minute-status check removes one unit and travel occurs at zero. Ordinary indoor time invokes this roughly once per game minute, with an additional check at ten-minute boundaries; travel and time-skipping services can also advance it. Thus units are not exact elapsed minutes or player actions. There is no need to remain stationary, but recasting resets the wait instead of hastening the pending spell.[7]

Strategy

Return saves repeated stair travel after a successful expedition. Start charging while you still have room to retreat and survive attacks. When returning to a dungeon, casting on floor 1 skips already-explored levels, but commits you to the deepest visited floor rather than letting you choose an intermediate destination.

Check the direction before casting: from floor 1 it sends you deeper, and from below floor 1 it leaves you inside the dungeon. To go home across the countryside, cast near an exit and leave promptly. Crossing a floor or scene boundary during charging can change the result, so do not treat the original casting location as a fixed destination promise.
