Breathing is a spell that prevents ordinary drowning and protects against the poison-cloud special attack. It is not universal immunity to poison, gas or dangerous liquids.[1]

Learning

Breathing belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia. These routes do not require a particular priesthood or martial guild rank.[2]

Effects

The initial cost is 20 mana. Each cast adds six ten-minute status updates of magical breathing, roughly an hour under ordinary local timekeeping, subject to the shared timing rules.[1][3]

Hazard Protection
Ordinary drowning in water Prevents drowning, including when armor or a heavy load pulls you under
Monster poison-cloud special Prevents that cloud from adding poison
Existing poison or other poison attacks Not cured; breathing is not poison immunity
Sleep-gas trap Does not prevent sleep
Water Station's destructive fluid Does not protect you

Ordinary water checks armor and burden before invoking drowning. Sleep gas instead checks sleep immunity, and the Water Station explicitly disregards breathing protection.[4]

Strategy

Cast before entering water with armor or a heavy inventory. Recasting extends protection but does not make hazardous liquids generally safe. Keep enough time and mana to return to ordinary ground rather than planning around an exact hour from the casting keypress.

Against a poison-cloud monster, breathing prevents new exposure from that special attack; use curing for poison already suffered. Levitate offers a different way across ordinary water and other ground hazards, with its own duration and interaction restrictions.
