Shadow form is a spell that makes you insubstantial, allowing passage through walls and granting several immunities. The tradeoff is loss of ordinary melee and many location interactions.[1]
Learning
Hecate teaches shadow form at Priest rank, at 1,500 priesthood XP; Set teaches it at Senior Priest, at 4,000. Each route requires the preceding rank and suitable alignment. The Thieves' Guild teaches it when a Master Thief becomes Shadowlord by surpassing the incumbent's character level and returning the Justiciar's Badge.[2]
It also belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
The initial cost is 50 mana. A cast adds your character level in ten-minute status updates. On entering shadow form, you gain immunity to normal damage, acid, theft and infection. Recasting while already shadowy extends the duration without adding another set of immunities. Expiry removes the four immunity contributions granted on entry.[1][4]
Shadow movement bypasses ordinary wall, door and creature obstruction. Chaos, the Abyss and the Void still ask for confirmation and can execute their dangerous effects. Many ordinary ground effects and services are skipped, but a specific set of locations remains usable, including altars, the magical guilds and various exits. You cannot initiate normal melee while shadowy; walking into an occupied square does not perform the ordinary bump attack.[5]
Press Ctrl-F to end an ordinary temporary shadow form. This removes its four immunity contributions and consumes no ordinary monster response. Move onto a usable, safe floor square before cancelling. Like expiry, cancellation itself does not execute the terrain underfoot. The cancellation command only accepts durations below 1,000; see temporary effects.[6]
Level-zero anomaly
Source inspection shows that a level-zero cast adds the four immunities but adds zero shadow duration. Consequently it does not enable wall passage, and neither ordinary shadow expiry nor Ctrl-F removes those contributions. Repeated level-zero casts can add them again. This is a version-specific implementation anomaly, not a tested gameplay route or the normal duration rule.[7]
Strategy
Use shadow form to bypass physical obstructions or retreat from threats covered by its immunities. It does not grant immunity to every damage type, and its movement freedom does not make the Chaos, Abyss or Void safe.
At low positive levels the duration is short, so plan the exit as well as the crossing. Cancel on safe ground when you need ordinary melee or a skipped service. Levitation costs less and is simpler when the obstacle is a ground hazard rather than a wall.
