The potion of alertness grants temporary alertness for searching and resisting invisible surprise. Its cursed name is potion of sleep, but the cursed branch actually does nothing.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-0 random potion with a shuffled container appearance. Tse-tse flies and torpor beasts begin with fixed copies. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.

Data and mechanics

It is object ID 71 and potion ID 5, with weight 20, fragility 5, base value 100 Au, and item level 0. Plus does not affect duration.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedAdds 9 alertness units and identifies itself.
UncursedAdds 4 alertness units and identifies itself.
CursedNo effect and no identification.

While alert, searching succeeds whenever the searched coordinate is in bounds, bypassing the usual two-in-three design chance. Alertness also prevents an invisible hostile monster's surprise routine from adding its delay. The status decays in ten-minute units.

Strategy

Use it before searching a trap-heavy or secret-rich area or approaching an invisible ambusher. Blessing more than doubles the duration. Once a cursed copy is known, discard or sell it rather than expecting the “sleep” name to describe an implemented effect.

Trivial

No reliable creator statement explaining the mismatch between the cursed name and its empty branch was found.
