The potion of banishing fear clears the player's fear counter. A cursed copy is a potion of fear that can prevent the player from initiating melee attacks until the status expires.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-2 random potion with a shuffled container appearance. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.

Data and mechanics

It is object ID 79 and potion ID 13, with weight 20, fragility 5, base value 50 Au, and item level 2. Positive blessing and plus do not improve the cure.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedClears fear and identifies itself; same effect as uncursed.
UncursedClears fear and identifies itself.
CursedWithout fear immunity, adds 0 through 99 fear units and does not identify itself.

Fear prevents the player from initiating an attack against a monster. It decays per move and ends with “You feel bolder now.” Fear immunity makes the cursed branch do nothing. A noncursed potion identifies itself even when there was no fear to clear.

Strategy

Carry an uncursed copy when fear could lock out melee, but do not bless it because the cure already sets fear to zero. A cursed roll can be zero, yet the upper range is long enough to make blind-quaffing dangerous near hostile monsters; fear immunity removes that risk.

Trivial

No reliable creator statement tying this generic potion name to a particular cultural source was found.
