The potion of levitation grants temporary controlled floating that bypasses many floor-triggered effects and the usual overloaded-movement check. It has no effect while mounted or when cursed.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-1 random potion with a shuffled container appearance. Floating eyes begin with fixed copies. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.

Data and mechanics

It is object ID 82 and potion ID 16, with weight 20, fragility 5, base value 50 Au, and item level 1. Plus does not affect duration. The wrapper identifies every BUC state.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedWhen unmounted, adds 2 through 6 levitation units.
UncursedWhen unmounted, adds 1 through 5 levitation units.
CursedNo effect beyond identification and consumption.

Mounted noncursed use prints a lightness-in-the-saddle message but grants no status. While levitating, ordinary movement suppresses many location functions unless the player deliberately uses the `@` activation command; functions below the levitation-avoidance threshold still run. The standard overloaded-movement failure check is also skipped while levitating and unmounted.

Strategy

Dismount before drinking. Use levitation to cross known hazardous floor features or move while overloaded, but do not assume every location function is bypassed; use `@` only when intentionally activating the square below. Blessing raises both minimum and maximum duration by one, while cursed copies are harmless but wasted.

Trivial

No reliable creator statement tying this generic potion name to a particular cultural source was found.
