The potion of monster detection temporarily plots every living monster on the current level. A cursed copy instead fills the display with unrelated random monster glyphs at random coordinates.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-1 random potion with a per-game shuffled container appearance. Random copies begin uncursed with a generated nonnegative plus.

Data and mechanics

It is object ID 69 and potion ID 3, with weight 20, fragility 5, base value 10 Au, and item level 1. Blessing and plus do not alter the noncursed result.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedPlots every monster with positive HP at its real position.
UncursedPlots every monster with positive HP at its real position.
CursedFor each living monster, plots a random monster glyph at a random position.

The detection screen persists until input and then returns to the normal view. Noncursed use identifies the potion; cursed use does not. The cursed output preserves only the count of loop iterations, and random collisions can hide even that count on screen.

Strategy

Use a verified noncursed copy to assess a dangerous or unfamiliar level before moving. Blessing has no added benefit. A cursed screen cannot safely guide routing because neither monster identity nor position is preserved.

Trivial

No reliable creator statement tying this generic potion name to a particular cultural source was found.
