The scroll of light illuminates the reader's room. A cursed copy is a scroll of darkness and darkens a lit room instead.

Generation and appearance

It is a common level-0 random scroll with a per-game shuffled inscription. Murk fungi begin with this scroll in their fixed inventory. Random copies begin uncursed.

Data and mechanics

It is object ID 64 and scroll ID 22, with weight 5, fragility 1, base value 30 Au, and item level 0. The wrapper identifies the scroll in every BUC state.

Effects and interactions

BUC stateResult
BlessedLights a dark room and grants 4 units of illumination.
UncursedLights a dark room and grants 3 units of illumination.
CursedDarkens the current room if it is lit.

In a dark numbered room, a noncursed scroll spreads light through the room and adds illumination. In an already lit room it only reports a surrounding glow and does not extend the status. Outside a numbered room it produces a faint glimmer with no lasting effect. A cursed copy darkens a lit room; in darkness or outside a room it only prints the corresponding no-effect message.

Strategy

Use an uncursed copy only after entering a dark room, because reading it in a lit room or corridor wastes both the scroll and its possible duration. Blessing adds only one illumination unit. A cursed copy can deliberately darken a room, but it offers no benefit from blessing first.

Trivial

No reliable creator statement tying this generic item name to a particular cultural source was found.
