A potion of chaos moves alignment toward Chaos and gives experience to a character who was already chaotic before drinking. It is the counterpart of the scroll of law.[1]

Generation

This item-level-3 ordinary potion can appear in random loot, pawn-shop stock, or through acquirement. Eating a servant of Law's corpse invokes the same chaos effect, providing a separate route to the alignment change.[2][3][4][5]

Description

Drinking subtracts a random 0–19 from alignment. If alignment was negative beforehand, the player then gains experience equal to ten times the absolute value of the resulting alignment. Starting at neutral or on the lawful side gives no experience from that use, even when the result becomes chaotic.

The effect ignores blessing, curse and enchantment. It does not automatically identify the potion type. A chaotic character who rolls zero still receives experience based on the unchanged alignment. The unusual cursed name Antinomy! does not reverse the effect or make it harmless to a lawful character's alignment.[6]

Strategy

For a chaotic character, this can supply both further alignment movement and experience. Establishing negative alignment before drinking captures the experience reward that a first use at exactly neutral would miss. For a lawful character, the same potion can undermine alignment-dependent plans.

Use self-knowledge or other relevant information to check your standing before making repeated alignment changes. The Chaos wish provides a fixed 25-point shift, while Balance resets alignment to zero, but wishing is a much more expensive resource. Do not spend blessing merely to change this potion's behavior.
