A potion of speed grants haste and removes slowing. It improves actions that scale with the character's speed, rather than shortening every command equally.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-1 ordinary potion, found through random loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. A tasmanian devil's remains can be transformed by Ambrosias into a blessed copy, normally for 20 Au.[2][3][4][5][6]
Description
Noncursed drinking clears slowing and adds 100B plus a random 0–249 haste units, where B is blessing strength. An uncursed bottle can roll zero; +1 blessing adds 100–349 units. The counter is reduced by minute-status updates, including the additional updates at ten-minute boundaries. Repeated use adds duration even when the message suggests little has happened.
Haste halves the speed value during combat-stat calculation, subject to the usual limits, burden, equipment and other modifiers. Lower speed values mean shorter delays for speed-scaled actions. Drinking still takes ten ticks and reading twenty, so haste does not make those commands proportionately faster.
A cursed potion adds 250–499 slowing units only if haste is not currently active. Active haste prevents this addition; the curse does not first remove haste. Noncursed use identifies the potion type, while cursed use does not. Enchantment does not alter the effect.
The effect sets haste before the inventory-removal step. Finishing a stack causes the normal combat-stat recalculation; drinking while copies remain can leave the displayed and effective speed unchanged until another recalculation. Prepare a separate single bottle when relying on immediate speed, and check the result before committing to an escape.[7][8][9][10][11]
Strategy
Use speed before a dangerous approach or retreat, and arrange a positively blessed copy when a zero-duration roll would be unacceptable. Heroism adds separate combat bonuses and a speed modifier; the two effects can complement one another, though the final speed limits still apply.
The haste spell and speed boots offer alternatives when available. Carrying excessive weight can reduce the practical benefit, so compare travel supplies with the load penalties. A cursed bottle is not a reliable way to cancel haste and should not be used with that expectation.
