A scroll of law moves alignment toward Law and can reward an already lawful character with experience. Its counterpart is the potion of chaos.[1]

Generation

It is an item-level-2 random scroll, also obtainable through pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Eating a servant of Chaos's corpse invokes the same law effect; that is a use of the remains, not a guaranteed scroll drop.[2][3][4][5]

Description

Reading adds a random integer from 0 through 19 to alignment. If alignment was already positive before the reading, it then grants experience equal to ten times the new alignment. A neutral or chaotic character receives the alignment change but no experience from that reading, even if the change crosses into Law.

Curse, blessing and enchantment do not change these rules. If an already lawful character rolls zero, alignment remains unchanged but the experience reward still occurs. The effect does not automatically record the scroll's type as identified.[6]

Strategy

For a lawful character, the scroll can combine alignment progression and experience gain. It is useful after establishing positive alignment, since using it at exactly neutral misses the experience reward. A strongly chaotic character may need several uses before becoming lawful; each change is small and can be zero.

Consider the consequences for current guilds, religion and alignment-dependent equipment before changing sides. A cursed label does not reverse this scroll into a chaos effect. When immediate neutrality or a fixed alignment shift is required, the Balance or Law option of wishing is more predictable, but consumes a much more valuable resource.
