A scroll of summoning creates a random hostile creature beside the reader. In this version, blessing the scroll does not turn it into a controllable or friendly summon.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-2 random scroll, obtainable through pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ambrosias can transform fnord's antennae into a blessed copy, normally for 100 Au. That blessing does not make the resulting summon friendly.[2][3][4][5][6]
Description
Like the rod of summoning, the scroll always produces the hostile random form. Cursed, uncursed and blessed copies all draw from the full range of monster kinds, without the ordinary current-difficulty restriction.
The effect looks for the first adjacent square that is in bounds, is floor, and has no creature. If one exists, the selected creature is created there and explicitly made hostile. If none exists, nothing is placed and the scroll is still spent. The player cannot select the kind or the adjacent square. Every reading identifies the scroll type.
The summoned creature goes through normal creature construction, including its initial possessions and special behavior. Hostility does not imply that every result can immediately move or attack in the same way; those properties belong to the selected creature.[7][8][9]
Strategy
This is a deliberate risk, not an emergency ally. The unrestricted result can be far stronger than the current floor suggests. Only consider generating an encounter when you have prepared defenses and a credible escape, and remember that the scroll itself cannot be read once fear or blindness prevents reading.
The ordinary summoning spell uses the difficulty-based form instead, so the spell and scroll are not interchangeable. Older spoiler discussions of choosing a creature with a blessed scroll do not describe this version's actual scroll behavior. Spending a blessing solely to control this scroll is wasted.[10]
