A hand-axe is a light, one-handed cutting weapon. It offers the damage and weight of a short sword with slightly lower accuracy; its name does not give it a special throwing bonus.[1]
Generation
Julie's sells a fully identified, uncursed +0 hand-axe for 100 Au. It is also available through ordinary random generation, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Its item level is 1; random enchantment and blessing follow the shared weapon rules.[2]
Description
Its normal cut receives the Strength damage bonus, and lunges are available. Enchantment adds to both hit and damage while wielded. All damage is ordinary physical damage, so neither a strong arm nor a heavily enchanted hand-axe bypasses an opponent's physical immunity.[3]
Throwing uses the ordinary Fire/Throw command and can leave the axe on the ground for recovery. A spare hand-axe's printed hit and damage are not independent projectile bonuses; current character combat values govern that branch. It does not return automatically.[4]
Tunneling uses its base damage rating without the thrusting multiplier and can trigger cutting-weapon damage. It is not a dedicated mining tool, nor does the game grant it the striking weapon's exemption from that tunneling mishap.[5]
Strategy
The hand-axe sits between a cutlass and a short sword when comparing equally enchanted copies:[6]
| Weapon | Julie's price | Hit | Damage rating | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cutlass | 80 Au | +8 | 8 | 35 |
| Hand-axe | 100 Au | +10 | 8 | 25 |
| Short sword | 80 Au | +11 | 8 | 25 |
The plain short sword is the stronger purchase in this comparison. A found +1 hand-axe, however, matches the plain short sword's hit contribution and adds one damage point at the same weight. That makes identification and enchantment more useful guides than a blanket preference for swords over axes. Keep a usable find when it saves money, but do not buy one expecting a special ranged attack.
