Mithril chain mail is light magical body armor that protects its wearer from fear. In the infobox, p is the individual suit's enchantment.[1]
Generation
Mithril chain mail can be found among randomly generated treasure, including the random possessions of treasure-bearing monsters, and may appear in Knight's Pawn Shop. A noncursed acquirement effect can create body armor; a blessed effect lets you select this type, but the resulting item's blessing and enchantment still follow its own generation rules.[2][3][4][5]
It is not part of Julie's fixed stock.[6]
Description
Wear it in the Armor slot. Its normal-damage absorption is 5; its contribution to defense is your enchantment minus 2. These are different protections: enchantment makes you harder to hit but does not increase absorption. See Defense and protection for the damage floor, burden and attacks that bypass armor.[7][8]
While worn, it grants fear immunity, even when cursed. A cursed suit also makes you berserk for as long as its effect remains: attacks on nonhostile creatures skip the usual confirmation, so moving into a peaceful creature can have consequences. Ordinary removal withdraws the armor's fear protection and its cursed berserk contribution.[9][10]
The type's visible name does not reveal every copy's enchantment or curse. Its magical power can also be stripped by a mundanity effect without changing that name; being blessed is not a guarantee against every way of losing protection.[11][12]
Strategy
At equal enchantment its physical protection matches lamellar, while fear immunity adds a useful reason to switch. Mithril plate adds three absorption for 100 more weight and one extra defense penalty. Identify a found suit first: cursed mithril still blocks fear, but its forced aggression can turn an accidental movement into an attack on a peaceful creature.
Compare all body armor and shields when assembling your defenses.
