Demonhide armor is light elemental-protection armor that is always deeply cursed when created by ordinary generation or acquirement. In the infobox, p is the individual suit's enchantment.[1]

Generation

Demonhide armor can be found among randomly generated treasure, including the random possessions of treasure-bearing monsters, and may appear in Knight's Pawn Shop. A noncursed acquirement effect can create body armor; a blessed effect lets you select this type, but the resulting item's blessing and enchantment still follow its own generation rules.[2][3][4][5]

It is not part of Julie's fixed stock.[6]

Description

Wear it in the Armor slot. Its normal-damage absorption is 5; its contribution to defense is your enchantment with no fixed penalty. These are different protections: enchantment makes you harder to hit but does not increase absorption. See Defense and protection for the damage floor, burden and attacks that bypass armor.[7][8]

It grants fire, cold and electricity immunity while worn, including when cursed. Acid, poison, life drain and other magical effects require their own protections.[9][10]

Generation and acquirement always produce -6 enchantment with curse strength -9. The suit still absorbs five points and grants its three elemental immunities, but lowers defense by six and cannot be normally removed after use.[11][12]

Ordinary blessing cannot safely cleanse this curse. A blessing effect below strength 8 is resisted; one of strength 8 or more destroys the suit. Self-targeted dispelling at effective strength 8 or more instead removes the curse from the worn suit, leaving its -6 enchantment unchanged. Only then consider blessing or enchanting it to recover defense.[13][14]

The type's visible name does not reveal every copy's enchantment or curse. Its magical power can also be stripped by a mundanity effect without changing that name; being blessed is not a guarantee against every way of losing protection.[15][16]

Strategy

It offers fire, cold and electricity immunity relatively early, but the guaranteed curse locks it on and its -6 enchantment lowers defense. An experienced character with a sufficiently strong self-targeted dispelling effect can remove the curse without destroying the suit; that leaves the -6 enchantment to repair separately. For a new character without that recovery route, selling or storing it is safer than wearing it for its resistances. Blessed acquirement can select demonhide but does not make the result safe.

Compare all body armor and shields when assembling your defenses.
