Shield of deflection is a magical shield that adds substantial defense and, when noncursed, makes several kinds of incoming bolt miss. In the infobox, p is the individual shield's enchantment.[1]
Generation
Shield of deflection can be found among randomly generated treasure, including the random possessions of treasure-bearing monsters, and may appear in Knight's Pawn Shop. A noncursed acquirement effect can create shields; a blessed effect lets you select this type, but the resulting item's blessing and enchantment still follow its own generation rules.[2][3][4][5]
It is not part of Julie's fixed stock.[6]
The Order of Paladins awards a +6 shield with blessing strength 9 when you become Justiciar. You must already be a Paladin, exceed the incumbent's character level, have returned the Star Gem to the LawBringer, and have alignment strictly above 300. This fixed gift does not undergo random enchantment generation.[7]
Description
In the Shield slot, it adds 6 + enchantment to defense. It does not add normal-damage absorption or require a matching block to supply that bonus. You can use a shield alongside a two-handed weapon in 0.90.4 because the Shield slot is separate from both hand slots. Its weight still counts toward burden.[8][9][10]
A normally generated copy has +6 enchantment when uncursed, +7 when blessed, or -7 when cursed. Adding the base six gives +12, +13 or -1 total defense respectively.[11]
While noncursed and worn it grants deflection: normal missile bolts, firebolts, lightning bolts and icicles reaching your square automatically miss. It does not reflect them back, and the effect is not checked for monster melee or area explosions.[12][13]
A cursed copy instead clears any existing deflection and adds vulnerability. Vulnerability makes a nearby night gaunt's special abduction check succeed whenever that check occurs; it is not a general damage multiplier. Taking off the shield removes its own sustained status contribution, but ordinary swapping cannot remove a cursed item in use.[14][15]
Fully identify a found copy before use. A mundanity effect can also strip the power and enchantment from a noncursed shield while leaving its familiar name.[16][17]
Strategy
A normal noncursed find supplies +12 or +13 total defense and stops physical missiles, firebolts, lightning bolts and icicles on their direct bolt path. It is not a universal missile or magic immunity: keep other answers to melee and area attacks. The Justiciar reward offers a guaranteed blessed +6 copy on that career path. A cursed find instead has net -1 defense, removes existing deflection and adds vulnerability, so identifying it before use is essential.
Compare all shields and defense, absorption and tactical blocking before treating a higher base bonus as an automatic upgrade.
