Draft:Scroll of wishing

A scroll of wishing grants one of a fixed set of named wishes. It cannot directly produce an arbitrary named item, and a cursed reading kills the reader instead of offering a safe choice.[1]

Generation

This is the highest-level ordinary scroll, at item level 10. It remains possible in shallow random generation through the over-level exception, can appear in pawn-shop stock, and can be selected with a blessed scroll of acquirement.[2][3][4][5]

Description

For a noncursed scroll, enter one of the following complete words with exactly the capitalization shown. An unrecognized response wastes the wish. Blessing beyond uncursed does not strengthen it.

Wish Normal-play result
Power Set current mana to ten times the calculated normal maximum.
Skill Gain experience equal to the lesser of 10000 and current experience.
Wealth Gain 10000 Au.
Knowledge Learn one random spell; if already known, halve its mana cost, rounded down, with a minimum of 1.
Health Raise current HP to at least maximum HP, and remove poison and disease.
Balance Set alignment to neutral.
Chaos / Law Move alignment 25 points toward the chosen side.
Location Open strategic travel choices; normal play blocks this escape from the Astral Plane and Circle Demesne.
Acquisition Choose an item category, then receive a random kind within it.
Summoning Summon through the ordinary difficulty-based summoning effect, without choosing a creature.
Destruction Kill adjacent creatures, then kill the player with mystic lightning. This is not a safe combat wish.
Death Die.

The Power branch can also print a misleading failure message afterward; the mana grant has already occurred. Skill is not a guaranteed experience level and gives nothing at zero experience. Health does not multiply maximum HP or remove blindness.

Noncursed reading records the scroll's type. A cursed reading is fatal regardless of the desired wish. After wishing, the selected scroll object is replaced with blank paper and removed. Read a single separated copy: using a stack can lose the whole stack when that replacement resets its count.[6][7][8]

Strategy

Decide the exact wish before reading. Wealth is predictable; Power supports a period of intensive spellcasting; Knowledge is a random research benefit. Health is an emergency recovery when poison or disease accompanies low HP, but a cheaper healing or curing potion may already solve the problem.

For a specific item, a blessed acquirement scroll is more precise than wishing for Acquisition. Do not spend a blessing expecting a stronger wish, and do not confuse Power with increasing the Power attribute. Older spoiler lists discuss other stat wishes and different health rewards; the table above describes this version's actual accepted words and effects.[9]
