A bag of unmilled grain is food that adds three food points when eaten. Its more distinctive use is feeding a horse so that it can be ridden.[1]

Generation

Grain is item-level-2 random food, possible in pawn-shop stock and through noncursed acquirement. Normal generation leaves it unblessed.[2]

Each food-storage site in a village granary supplies ten grain objects. These are not automatically safe public supplies: signs forbid entry, and Star View and Skorch have concealed alarms beside grain. Use the village's map and warnings before approaching a bin.[3]

Eating and feeding

Eat consumes one bag and adds three reserve points, clamping a negative result to zero. Blessing and cursing do not change the nourishment. A reserve of 45 or below before eating avoids overeating.[4]

For a mount, use Give on an adjacent hungry horse, then talk to the peaceful, fed horse and accept its ride. Ordinary rations do not meet the horse's grain requirement, and throwing grain does not feed an ordinary horse. Give refuses cursed grain. The riding offer has additional location and existing-mount conditions described on Horse.[5]

Grain can also feed an ordinary hungry non-horse creature. Feeding consumes the offered unit and ends ordinary hunger and hostility; it does not heal or confer a universal pet status.[6]

Strategy

Reserve a noncursed bag when planning to obtain a mount. Its three food points are easily replaced by other meals, while most other foods cannot replace it in that interaction. Securing grain and a safe route to a horse matters more than paying the village merchant first: payment does not itself feed or mount the horse.[7]
