The Lord of Chaos is the person holding the game's record for the most Chaotic ending alignment. The supplied initial holder is Arioch. The record can later supply a physical NPC for encounters, including a notable resident of a mansion in Rampart. It is not a guild office earned by defeating Arioch.[1][2][3]

Encounters

A mansion's notable resident can be the Lord of Chaos. The resident starts hostile, sleeping if generated at night. Historical office-holders also have wilderness and summoning encounter paths; summoning the Hiscore NPC type selects a random recorded person, not a chosen Lord of Chaos. Ordinary dungeon population excludes this type.

Outside the mansion and hostile-summoning overrides, negative player alignment gives an additional one-in-two chance to make the Lord initially nonhostile. Failure leaves the ordinary difficulty-based disposition in place. Thus this is not a universal 50% chance of being attacked, and being Chaotic is not a guarantee of a friendly mansion visit.

Initial Arioch is a melee fighter with attack strength 21, armor class 5 and base damage 35, worth 140 experience. These are combat parameters, not a fixed 35-HP hit. Arioch starts without a special carried item and offers ordinary personal remarks rather than a quest or service menu. Later holders can have other abilities and conversations according to their recorded careers.[2][4][5][6]

Taking the record

When a non-cheated character ends a game at level 1 or higher, the game compares that character's ending alignment with the current Chaos record. A value strictly lower takes the record: initially, -101 qualifies and -100 does not. You do not have to exceed Arioch's recorded character level or set a new overall score.

The check occurs for death, quitting and victory or retirement. Becoming extremely Chaotic during an unfinished game does not immediately replace the holder. The new history records your name, ending level, alignment and behavior for later encounters; this does not grant a current-game guild rank or reward item.

Killing an encountered Lord of Chaos instead substitutes a randomly named holder and changes the recorded behavior, while retaining the previous level and Chaos record. It neither appoints you nor makes the record easier to beat.[7][8][9][10]

Strategy

Treat the title as a historical achievement rather than a source of equipment or a necessary step in a guild quest. If pursuing it, the alignment you finish with matters: returning toward Neutral can undo an earlier qualifying extreme before the record is checked.

For an actual encounter, use the current holder's behavior rather than assuming the name describes supernatural powers. A mansion Lord remains an ordinary hostile resident to plan around, even when your own alignment is strongly Chaotic.

Trivia

Arioch shares both name and the title Lord of Chaos with a figure from Michael Moorcock's Elric stories. The pairing suggests an allusion; Omega's recorded-person encounter does not reproduce that character's divine powers. Titan Comics: Michael Moorcock and Elric[11][1]
