A nymph or satyr is a peaceful alluring creature that can grant experience and current Constitution through conversation. Its initial appearance is also used by a hostile incubus or succubus, so the displayed name alone does not guarantee a favorable encounter.[2]

Generation

These creatures occur in ordinary random pools. A preference for women produces a red nymph symbol, n; a preference for men produces a red satyr, s. Other preferences allow a random choice. They begin peaceful and needy, with no possessions or innate immunities, and can open doors.[3]

Successful Ritual magic in an unoccupied harem or boudoir can summon either this kind or an incubus/succubus with equal probability. The ritual's time, concentration, hour and previous-room restrictions still apply, and the summoned creature needs a free adjacent floor square.[4]

Conversation and danger

Conversation can be started directly or by the creature's special action when adjacent. A player with no romantic preference receives no benefit and the creature leaves. Otherwise, accepting its invitation gives 500 experience and adds one to current Constitution, without increasing maximum Constitution. Refusing gives no reward and no attribute penalty. The creature vanishes afterward, so the conversation is not repeatable with the same individual.[5]

It has no ordinary attacks or defensive actions. If hostile, its special response makes it vanish and attempts three random hostile summons beside the player. Making it an enemy can therefore be much more dangerous than its zero damage rating suggests.[6]

Its needy gift response uses the current depth squared as the satisfaction threshold. Gifts are not a prerequisite for the favorable conversation; the ordinary creature is already peaceful.[7]

Remains and strategy

Normal death has a 50% chance to leave an inedible corpse with no alchemical use. Conversation or hostile escape leaves no ordinary death reward or corpse.[8]

The favorable encounter offers a modest attribute benefit and substantial experience, but the demonic counterpart is visually indistinguishable at first. Refusing the demonic invitation avoids its immediate level drain; attacking a genuine nymph or satyr can summon three unrelated enemies. Evaluate behavior as well as appearance before committing.
