A potion of healing restores HP and removes blindness. Its enchantment controls the amount of healing, while a curse changes the effect into direct HP loss.[1]

Generation

Healing is an item-level-2 ordinary potion, obtainable through random loot, pawn-shop stock, and acquirement. Randomly constructed copies start uncursed with nonnegative enchantment: +0 is most common, and each successive plus is half as likely.[2][3][4][5]

Description

For ordinary nonnegative enchantment p, the effect is:

Potion state HP change Blindness[6]
Uncursed or blessed Attempts to restore a random 1 through 10(p + 1) HP Cleared, even if no HP is gained
Cursed Direct loss of a random 0 through 10(1 + abs(p)) HP Unchanged

If noncursed healing raises HP above the normal maximum, HP is set to maximum + p + 1. A character already at or above that small reserve receives no additional healing.

At +0, the ordinary result is 1–10 healing with a possible reserve of 1 HP above maximum. Blessing does not directly improve this effect, but applying blessing also changes enchantment and can therefore indirectly increase healing.

Cursed disruption kills if HP becomes negative and does not consult ordinary damage immunities. Its formula also applies to negative enchantment. Unusual negative enchantment can make an otherwise noncursed potion harmful; establish the individual properties rather than relying on type alone.

Noncursed drinking records the potion's type. Cursed disruption does not automatically identify it. Drinking remains possible when blindness or fear prevents reading a scroll, provided the potion is accessible rather than packed away.[7]

Strategy

Keep a known safe copy ready for a low-HP emergency or blindness that blocks escape scrolls. Use larger enchantments for larger injuries; a +0 potion is not a reliable full heal for an experienced character. The reserve above maximum is small, so repeatedly drinking at full health offers little protection relative to saving the potion for actual damage.

Healing does not remove poison or disease. Use curing or neutralize poison for those problems, and restoration for drained attributes. The healing spell uses a stronger fixed healing amount than an ordinary +0 potion, but requires spell access and mana. Regeneration works over time and spends mana, so it does not replace immediate healing under attack.
