A scroll of dispelling can remove curses from worn equipment, suppress a sufficiently weak creature's abilities, or neutralize particular magical hazards. Its target and effective strength determine which of these uses is possible.[1]

Generation

It belongs to the item-level-3 random scroll pool and can appear at the pawn shop or through acquirement.[2][3][4][5]

Description

A noncursed scroll has effective strength B + r, where B is blessing strength and r is a random integer from 0 through 2. Enchantment does not contribute. Choose a square on the map:

Target Success condition Result[6]
Your own square For each cursed item in use: effective strength + 1 is at least the curse magnitude Removes that curse and reapplies the item at neutral blessing. Unused possessions and backpack contents are excluded; enchantment does not increase.
A creature Creature level is strictly less than three times effective strength Removes special and ranged attacks, immunities, invisibility and intangibility; changes an existing melee attack to ordinary melee. Does not kill or pacify the creature.
An empty hazard square Fire, teleport or disintegration trap; awakening statue; magic pool Removes the trap or statue's special behavior, or turns the pool into ordinary water. Other terrain is not universally dispelled.

A zero-strength result cannot affect a nonnegative-level creature.

A cursed scroll targets the player without the normal selection. It reduces several temporary beneficial counters to 1 and immediately runs a ten-minute status update, ending many of those effects. It is not the useful self-targeted curse-removal operation. Speed and regeneration use a different regular update, so do not assume every affected counter expires at exactly the same instant.

The scroll does not automatically identify its type. A successful change can still reveal what happened to an observant player, while a resistant target or unaffected square is ambiguous.[7][8]

Strategy

For cursed worn equipment, compare dispelling's strength test with blessing: successful dispelling sets the curse to neutral without the blessing effect's heavily cursed-item destruction branch. Blessing the scroll increases both the guaranteed and possible dispelling strength.

Against a creature of level L, calculate whether any of the three possible strengths can satisfy L < 3 × strength before relying on it. An ordinary uncursed copy has possible strengths 0, 1 and 2; it cannot suppress a level-6 creature. Against magical terrain, carefully select an unoccupied square so a creature does not take precedence over the trap.

Do not test a cursed copy while depending on breathing, levitation or combat buffs. Its forced status update has broader consequences than simply removing an inconvenient enchantment. The dispelling spell or a staff of dispelling can provide a reusable alternative, but their supplied strengths must be considered separately.
