A staff of dispelling can remove curses from equipment in use, strip a sufficiently low-level monster's powers, or deactivate particular magical terrain effects. Its strength depends on blessing, not enchantment. A cursed staff of self-dispelling instead shortens the user's beneficial effects.[1]

Generation

It is an item-level-6 random wand, normally with 1–20 charges, random blessing and +0 enchantment. Random loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement can supply it.[2]

Ambrosias converts the Heart of the Eater of Magic into a blessed +10 staff with 20 charges for 500 Au. Its blessing is +1; the +10 enchantment does not give it dispelling strength ten.[3]

Description

For nonnegative blessing B, each use selects strength D = B + a random 0, 1 or 2, then asks for a target. It directly examines that square, without a projectile, hit roll or line-of-sight test.[4]

Target or condition Result
User Removes curses of magnitude at most D + 1 from all items currently in use; stronger curses remain. Unused inventory is unaffected.
Monster of level less than 3D Removes special actions, ranged strikes, immunities, invisibility and intangibility; existing melee attacks become ordinary melee. A creature without melee does not gain it.
Unoccupied affected terrain Deactivates fire, teleport and disintegration traps or an awakening-statue effect; turns a magic pool into ordinary water. Other terrain is unaffected.
Cursed staff Does not ask for a target; shortens selected temporary benefits on the user and immediately performs a ten-minute status update.

The monster threshold is strict. With blessing zero, levels 0–2 qualify on two of the three strength results, levels 3–5 on one, and level 6 or higher never qualifies. The alchemical staff's +1 blessing moves these bands to guaranteed success at levels 0–2, two results at 3–5, one at 6–8, and failure from level 9. Monster immunity does not provide a separate resistance roll. Success leaves HP, ordinary combat statistics, movement method and attitude intact, so a dispelled monster can remain dangerous.[5]

Cursed use reduces nonzero counts below 1000 to one for accuracy effects, displacement, haste, water breathing, invisibility, regeneration, alertness, heroism, levitation and true sight. The immediate status update expires benefits it processes, including levitation and invisibility, and also advances other ten-minute counters once. Haste and regeneration wait for their normal minute update; this is not a blanket removal of every status, nor does it advance the game clock by ten minutes.[6]

One charge is spent before the effect, even against an unsuitable target. Dispelling does not reveal the wand type by use. Escape at the noncursed targeting prompt is not checked before target lookup; cancel at item selection instead of relying on aiming cancellation.[7]

Strategy

Check blessing before choosing a difficult target. Extra enchantment supplies no stronger dispel, and an unblessed staff cannot strip a high-level enemy just because it has many charges. Successful dispelling can remove an immunity that blocks your attacks, but does not pacify the target or erase its basic melee damage.[8]

Self-targeting a noncursed staff can free several mildly cursed equipped items in one use. Do not confuse that with cursed self-dispelling, especially while relying on levitation or another temporary protection. Before converting the Eater's Heart, decide whether you need it for Collegium Magii succession; alchemy consumes the same trophy.[9]
