A historical officeholder is a named person constructed from the world's recorded leaders or highest-scoring adventurer. Names, health and behavior can change as those records change. The generic template is not a fixed five-HP opponent.[2]
Generation and identities
Ordinary dungeon random-monster selection excludes this unique template. Direct construction, including the countryside's less restricted random selection and explicit summoning, can choose one of the first fifteen recorded identities. Dedicated locations also construct particular officeholders, including the Justiciar.[3]
| Recorded identity | Article or role |
|---|---|
| Highest scorer | The name, final level and behavior saved for the highest-scoring non-cheating character |
| Six high priests | Odin, Set, Athena, Hecate, Druidism and Destiny |
| Shadowlord | Leader of the Thieves' Guild |
| Commandant | Leader of the Legion |
| Archmage | Head of the College |
| Prime | Prime Sorceror |
| Champion | Arena Champion |
| Duke | Duke of Rampart |
| Alignment lords | Lord of Chaos and Lord of Law |
| Justiciar | Leader of the Order of Paladins; dedicated construction, outside the random fifteen-identity selection |
The highest-score record changes only when a non-cheating character strictly exceeds the saved score. It records that character's name, level and chosen behavior; it is not a single permanently named boss.[4]
Dynamic attributes
The recorded character level determines initial health: twenty times that level plus twenty. Combat level instead comes from the recorded behavior's competence rating. Let that competence be c in the following table. Ordinary construction gives defense 5 and experience value 20c.[5]
| Behavior | Hit | Raw damage upper bound | Action interval | Additional ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | 3c | 5c | 3 | None from this behavior |
| Missile | 2c | 3c | 4 | Physical missiles |
| Spellcaster | c | c | 6 | Spellcasting at combat level c |
| Thief | c | c | 3 | Special theft |
| Fleeing | c | c | 3 | Extra retreating movement |
The normal action sequence remains one physical attack and one defense. Behavior and encounter-specific changes can alter hostility, movement and abilities. The Arena Champion and mansion residents also receive scene-specific construction changes, so the generic formulas do not replace their encounter descriptions.[6]
Allegiance, possessions and death
Initial hostility depends partly on the current difficulty, then receives role-specific adjustments for religion, alignment or membership. The Archmage and Justiciar have additional peaceful-state overrides. These are not universal guarantees against later provocation.[7]
Some roles can receive special possessions, including priestly holy symbols, the Archmage's Kolwynia and the Justiciar's badge, subject to the relevant object's availability conditions. They do not all receive the same generic loot. Services, quests and succession rules belong to the individual role articles.[8]
Normal death leaves a named body and can update the corresponding historical office. Eating a human officeholder's body follows the cannibalism rule: alignment decreases by ten and food increases by eight, with a previously lawful character's food first set to 25. There is no generic alchemical recipe for this template.[9]
Strategy
Identify the role and encounter before assessing a named person. A recorded level used for health, a behavior-derived combat level and a guild promotion rank are different quantities. The role's actual allegiance, special ability and scene modifications are more useful than the generic template or the familiar red human symbol.
