The Legion Commandant leads the Legion of Destiny in Rampart. The supplied initial commander is Sonders. He welcomes successful recruits and eventually retires in favor of a qualified Colonel who returns with the Demon Emperor's Regalia. The position is earned through Legion service and that quest, not by dueling Sonders.[1][2][3]

Encounters

At Legion headquarters, the Commandant appears in the enlistment and promotion narrative. The barracks accept visitors from 07:00 to 20:59. These services belong to the headquarters; talking to a physical Commandant elsewhere does not open its recruiting or promotion menu.

A Commandant can be a randomly selected notable resident of a mansion. He starts hostile there, even to Legion members, and sleeps if generated at night. Historical office-holders can also be encountered in the wilderness or summoned. Summoning the historical-NPC type chooses a random recorded person, so it cannot guarantee the Commandant; ordinary dungeon population excludes this type.

Outside the mansion and hostile-summoning exceptions, a recorded Legion membership makes the ordinary Commandant initially nonhostile. That is an initial disposition, not protection after attacking him. The initial Sonders fights in melee, with attack strength 21, armor class 5 and base damage 35, and is worth 140 experience. He has no special starting possessions. His conversation consists of ordinary remarks, and successors' fighting styles and dialogue can differ with their recorded behavior.[4][5][2]

Succession

Reach Colonel through the Legion's promotions, then return to headquarters with the Demon Emperor's Regalia at a character level higher than the incumbent's recorded level. Against the initial Sonders, this means level 11 or higher; his ordinary NPC combat level of 7 is irrelevant to the promotion check.

The Regalia is consumed. You become Commandant, learn Regeneration, receive 20,000 Au, and gain two points each of current and maximum Strength and Constitution. Your name, level and chosen behavior replace the incumbent's record for future encounters and games sharing that history. Games marked as cheated do not write the shared record.

Killing a physical Commandant brings an aide-de-camp who removes the corpse's insignia. A randomly named commander replaces him, but the recorded character level stays the same. You receive neither the title nor the headquarters' rewards, and the new name does not reduce the level required for promotion.[6][7][8]

Strategy

Keep the Demon Emperor's remains for the final promotion, and check your character level before making the trip back. Defeating Sonders in a mansion cannot replace either requirement. His lack of a special starting item also makes him a poor target if your aim is to obtain a guild quest object by theft.

A player's succession can raise the bar for later Legion careers sharing the same history: a level-20 Commandant requires the next Colonel to reach level 21. Plan around the current record rather than assuming Sonders and his level are permanent.

Name

Commandant Sonder's is the fixed name of Rampart's fast-food shops. It resembles Sonders's name, but the sign does not change when a new commander takes office and does not establish that the encountered Commandant operates those shops.[1][6][9]
