A mamba is a hostile venomous snake, displayed as a red m. It is fragile at ten HP, but has high accuracy, two attacks and a chance to poison on each hit.[2]
Generation
Mambas belong to ordinary random-monster pools and are explicitly included in jungle encounters. Ordinary mambas have no starting possessions.[3]
Poisonous attacks
For the shared damage, timing, immunity and treatment rules, see Poison.
The mamba pursues the player and attempts two physical attacks at a base interval of three ticks. Each landed attack rolls 0–19 physical damage before absorption and separately has a 30% chance to add 20 poison-status checks. Poison immunity blocks that added poisoning. While poison remains, each ordinary status update removes one count and applies three poison damage; repeated bites can extend the poisoning.[4]
Armor reduces the physical part, not the separate chance to become poisoned. Displacement can avoid the physical damage after a hit without skipping the subsequent poison check. Poison updates normally occur as game minutes pass, with additional periodic checks, so the duration is not exactly 20 player commands.[5]
The mamba has no innate immunity, no swimming or flying ability, and no food-pacification response. At one HP, its next normal pursuit movement triggers retreat and reduces its interval to two ticks. Its corpse, mamba filet, appears on 50% of normal deaths and is poisonous despite its food-like name. It has no alchemical transformation.[6]
Strategy
The mamba's low HP favors ending the encounter before repeated adjacent exchanges. Poison protection is valuable even with good armor; carry an appropriate antidote when relying on recovery after a bite. Do not eat the filet or try to pacify the living snake with food. The poisonous corpse can be retained as an offering for a genuinely hungry, non-poison-immune enemy, such as a lion, at the usual alignment cost.
