A lion is a hungry, hostile predator, displayed as a yellow l. It has two physical attacks, can swim, and appears in several countryside environments.[2]

Generation

Lions belong to the ordinary random pools and are explicitly included in plains, jungle and desert encounters on LOCUS. They start without equipment or random treasure.[3]

Behavior and feeding

A lion pursues and attempts two physical attacks when adjacent. Each has a raw damage roll of 0–24 before absorption. Its base interval is three ticks; it has no block, ranged attack, special ability or innate damage immunity. With one to 14 HP left, its next normal pursuit movement triggers retreat and reduces that interval to two ticks.[4]

While hungry, a lion accepts ordinary food and becomes peaceful. Give requires an adjacent target and a non-cursed item. Poison food instead causes 100 poison damage, enough to kill an otherwise unchanged 60-HP lion, and shifts alignment two points toward Chaos. An accepted meal is consumed and ends hunger, so feeding it safely first removes reliance on a later poison offering.[5]

Normal death has a 50% chance to leave lion souflee. It supplies the ordinary six points of food reserve, with no alchemical transformation.[6]

Strategy

A lion's two substantial attacks and short interval make extended adjacent exchanges dangerous for an early character. Safe food can end the encounter without requiring you to overpower it; a hornet corpse is a lethal alternative when the alignment cost is acceptable. Unlike a camel, it can swim after you. Its cooked-sounding remains are no more nutritious than bunnyburgers, so the difficulty of the hunt does not buy a larger meal.
