A camel is a hungry, initially hostile animal, displayed as a brown c. It is a desert encounter that can be pacified with food, unlike many of the game's peaceful but non-hungry animals.[2]
Generation
Camels belong to the ordinary random-monster pools and are explicitly included in desert encounters on LOCUS. Ordinary generation gives them no equipment or random treasure.[3]
Behavior and feeding
A hostile camel pursues and attempts one physical attack and one block when adjacent. It has no flight, swimming, ranged attack or innate immunity. With one to six HP remaining, its next normal pursuit movement triggers retreat and reduces its base interval from five to two ticks.[4]
While still hungry, a camel accepts ordinary food and becomes peaceful. Give requires an adjacent target and a non-cursed item. Poison food instead causes 100 poison damage, enough to kill an otherwise unchanged 30-HP camel, and shifts alignment two points toward Chaos. Both meals are consumed and end hunger, so feeding safe food first prevents reliance on the same response for a later poison offering.[5]
Its edible remains, hump au jus, appear on 50% of normal deaths. They add six food-reserve points; normal hourly hunger checks consume one. There is no alchemical transformation.[6]
Strategy
A meal can remove a camel from a dangerous fight without spending healing or weapon resources, but trades away food you may need for the journey. A hornet corpse is an alternative if you accept the poison-feeding alignment cost. Unlike a hyena, a camel cannot normally follow across water, though entering water is only useful if your own character can survive it. Its corpse is not a larger ration than smaller edible prey, so a 30-HP fight solely for food is not guaranteed to pay for itself.
