A giant crocodile is a hungry, hostile aquatic predator, displayed as a green c. It has two low physical attacks and one block, and leaves a hide rather than an ordinary meal.[2]
Generation
Giant crocodiles belong to ordinary random-monster pools and are explicitly included in river and swamp encounters. They are also one of the depth-dependent inhabitants of the sewers. An ordinary crocodile starts without possessions.[3]
Behavior and feeding
Its normal movement is restricted to water. When hostile and adjacent, it attempts two low attacks with raw physical rolls of 0–29 and has one defensive block. It has no innate immunity, ranged attack or special ability. At one to 19 HP, its next normal pursuit movement triggers retreat and reduces its base interval from eight to two ticks.[4]
While hungry, it accepts ordinary food and becomes peaceful. Give requires adjacency and a non-cursed offering. Poisonous food causes 100 poison damage, enough to kill the unchanged 80-HP form, and shifts alignment two points toward Chaos. Both accepted meals end hunger, so a later offering cannot be assumed to work after a safe meal.[5]
Crocodile hide appears on 50% of normal deaths. It is not ordinary food and has no alchemical transformation; carrying it does not make it wearable armor. The alchemist's purchasing service also rejects remains without a transformation.[6]
Strategy
Keep dry ground between yourself and the crocodile when possible, but do not stand next to it expecting the shoreline to prevent attacks. Ordinary food can defuse a still-hungry crocodile, and unlike the man o' war, it is vulnerable to poisoned food. If forced into melee, account for its two low attacks and its faster retreat at low HP. Its hide is not an emergency ration or a source of alchemical armor, so the reward does not justify hunting it just to solve hunger or equipment shortages.
