A man o' war is a hungry, hostile aquatic creature, displayed as a blue M. Its two attacks can poison, and it is itself immune to poison.[2]
Generation
Men o' war belong to ordinary random-monster pools and are explicitly included in river encounters. Countryside generation gives an exclusively swimming creature a water tile beneath it. Normally generated men o' war carry no items.[3]
Attacks and feeding
Its normal movement is restricted to water. When hostile and adjacent, it attempts two attacks, each rolling 0–29 physical damage before absorption and separately having a 30% chance to add 30 poison-status checks. Poison immunity prevents the added poisoning. Existing poisoning normally applies three poison damage per status update while counting down; armor or displacement of the physical damage does not cancel the separate poison check.[4]
While hungry, a man o' war accepts ordinary food and becomes peaceful. Give requires adjacency and a non-cursed offering. Do not substitute poisoned food: it consumes the offering, remains hostile, loses its hunger and shifts your alignment two points toward Chaos, but its poison immunity prevents the damage. You then cannot rely on another normal feeding response to undo the mistake.[5]
Poison updates normally occur as game minutes pass, with additional periodic checks; the duration is not a fixed number of player commands. Repeated poisoning adds to the remaining duration.[6]
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave deliquescing tentacles. These are poisonous remains, not ordinary food, and have no alchemical transformation.[7]
Strategy
Use its restriction to water to avoid pursuit across dry ground; do not stand adjacent to it merely because you are on the bank. If escape is awkward, an ordinary meal is an alternative to melee while it remains hungry. Poison-based offense and the common poison-food trick fail against its immunity. When fighting, poison protection or an appropriate antidote addresses a danger that physical armor alone does not remove.
