A lurker at the threshold is an immobile monster displayed with the open-door symbol. It is a creature with HP and possessions, not an actual door or a special door trap.[2]
Generation
Lurkers belong to ordinary random-monster pools. Their normal construction does not require a door square; the door-like image is the monster's own symbol. An ordinary lurker has no fixed item and zero through three random possessions.[3]
Attacks and feeding
The lurker cannot move, but has the fastest ordinary action interval, one tick. When adjacent and hostile it makes three physical lunges, each with a raw 0–19 damage roll and a level-based hit bonus. It has no defensive action, ranged attack or special power, and no innate immunity.[4]
Safe food pacifies its hungry form. Poisonous food instead causes poison damage, leaves it hostile and uses up the feeding response. Its stationary nature does not prevent adjacent attacks before or after an unsuccessful feeding attempt.[5]
Remains and strategy
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a dead lurker. The heavy remains are inedible and have no alchemical transformation.[6]
Stay beyond adjacency and use a ranged attack when you need to kill it. Its lack of movement and ranged powers is a much greater limitation than its door-like appearance suggests. If the route permits, leave it behind or use safe food to pass a peaceful specimen. Do not stand beside it taking repeated one-tick triple lunges merely because it cannot chase you.
