A servant of chaos is an initially peaceful agent of chaos that turns hostile toward lawful players. The Circle of Sorcerors has a distinct version participating in its collective magical defense.[2]
Generation
Servants of chaos occur in ordinary random pools, the deep Astral Plane's special table and the Circle. They have zero or one random possession, can open doors and are immune to fear and sleep.[3]
Alignment and combat
An ordinary servant's nearby special action makes it hostile if the player's alignment is positive. Later becoming neutral or chaotic does not automatically pacify it. It makes four physical attacks, raw damage 0–9 each, has no defensive actions, and can fire physical missiles of the same damage range at normal distances three through seven.[4]
The Circle version replaces the alignment reaction with the court's shared retaliation. A hostile participant can make the group hostile and trigger immediate spellcasting; the servant then retains individual level-4 spellcasting. A Circle member's initial peaceful reception does not protect against that subsequent group response.[5]
The ordinary servant of chaos does not initiate the mutual-destruction conversation. A servant of law can initiate it and be directed at this creature, killing both.[6]
Remains
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a dead servant. Consuming its remains shifts alignment toward law by 0–19. If already lawful before use, the player also gains ten times the resulting alignment in experience. Crossing zero during that use does not qualify for the bonus. It supplies no food and has no alchemical use.[7]
Strategy
Its low physical damage is offset by four attacks per exchange. Avoid assuming that a Circle specimen follows the ordinary alignment rule: its spellcasting response is more significant than its basic blows. Chaotic characters should be cautious with the remains, whose alignment effect reverses the living servant's allegiance.
