A servant of law is an initially peaceful agent of order that turns hostile toward chaotic players. It can be persuaded to destroy a servant of chaos, killing both creatures.[2]
Generation
Servants of law occur in ordinary random pools, the deep Astral Plane's special table and fixed positions at Star Peak. Ordinary specimens carry zero or one random possession. They can open doors and are immune to fear and sleep.[3]
Alignment and combat
Its nearby special action makes it hostile if the player's alignment is negative. Moving back to lawful or neutral alignment does not automatically remove hostility already acquired. It has one physical lunge, raw damage 0–19, one defense and a physical missile attack of the same damage range. Its normal ranged distances are three through seven.[4]
When spoken to, it asks whether a servant of chaos is nearby. Answering yes and selecting an actual servant of chaos causes both to die at the selected creature's position. The conversation gives 120 experience directly; the two normal deaths can each give their usual additional experience if visible, and can leave possessions and remains. An incorrect indication only produces a rebuke.[5]
Remains
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a dead servant. Consuming a servant of law's remains shifts alignment toward chaos by 0–19. If the player was already chaotic before consuming it, it also grants experience equal to ten times the resulting absolute alignment. Crossing from neutral or lawful to chaotic during this use does not qualify for that bonus. It supplies no food and has no alchemical transformation.[6]
Strategy
Check alignment before treating a peaceful servant as safe. A correctly identified servant of chaos offers a way to remove both without a direct fight and possibly recover their drops. Eating the law servant's remains has the opposite alignment effect from its name, so lawful characters should preserve their alignment rather than assume the corpse is beneficial to their cause.
