A high angel is a stronger angel with fire bolts and a one-time summons of three ordinary angels. Its divine affiliation appears in its name and affects whether it becomes hostile.[2]
Generation
High angels occur in ordinary random pools, the deep Astral Plane and random main-temple placements. An archangel can summon three. They carry zero through two random possessions, with no fixed item. A temple supplies its own deity; outside temples ordinary construction chooses among the six faiths.[3]
Description
It makes one physical lunge for raw damage 0–29 and has three defenses. Its fire bolt has the same raw damage range and ordinary ranged reach of three through nine squares. It flies, opens doors and is immune to fire, fear and sleep, but not physical damage, cold or electricity.[4]
It follows the same divine-opposition rules as an ordinary angel. Once hostile, its special action tries to summon three hostile ordinary angels beside the player and is then removed, even if free adjacent floor was unavailable. Those new angels retain their own one-time summoning response, so the initial three summons can lead to further reinforcements.[5]
A hostile high angel reaching its own deity's altar has HP set to 500. Normal death has a 50% chance to leave inedible robes with no alchemical use.[6]
Strategy
Fire protection handles the bolts but leaves the physical lunge and the summoned host. Avoid provoking a religiously compatible high angel without a reason, and account for ordinary angels subsequently summoning phantoms. Cold or electricity bypasses its fire immunity; sleep does not.
