An angel is a flying divine servant whose displayed name includes its patron deity. It starts peaceful, but religious opposition or an attack can make it hostile and trigger a one-time summons of three phantoms. High angels and archangels are stronger, distinct kinds.[2]
Generation
Angels occur in ordinary random pools, the deep Astral Plane and random main-temple placements. A hostile high angel can summon three. They carry no ordinary possessions. In a main temple their deity is that temple's deity; elsewhere ordinary construction chooses equally among the six faiths. The name gains the corresponding divine affiliation without changing its basic combat ratings.[3]
Divine allegiance
An angel's nearby special action can make it hostile according to its deity and the player's patron:
| Angel's deity | Players that provoke religious hostility |
|---|---|
| Odin or Athena | Followers of Set or Hecate |
| Set or Hecate | Followers of Odin or Athena |
| Destiny | Anyone not following Destiny |
| The Balance | No hostility from this particular check |
This reaction does not clear hostility acquired by other means. An angel can therefore remain an enemy despite compatible religion.[4]
Once hostile, it attempts to summon three hostile phantoms onto free floor beside the player, then loses this special action. Failed placements still consume the one-time response. The same action performs the religious check, so an angel that has expended it no longer repeats that check.[5]
Combat and remains
The angel has one physical lunge, raw damage 0–19, two defenses and no ranged attack. It flies and opens doors, but is not intangible. Fear and sleep are its only innate immunities. A hostile angel reaching an altar of its own deity has its HP set to twice its ordinary maximum; that matching-deity response takes priority over the altar damaging an enemy.[6]
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave an inedible gown with no alchemical use.[7]
Strategy
Read the divine name before approaching an apparently peaceful angel. Its single physical attack is less significant than the phantoms it can place around the player. Those phantoms are physically immune life-drainers, so a plan that works against the angel may fail against its reinforcements. Avoid fighting it beside an altar that favors its own deity.
