A powtab is a mana-restoring tablet used with Eat. It sets current mana to 2 × current Power × (player level + 1). It provides no nourishment and does not permanently increase maximum mana.[1]
Generation
Powtabs are item-level-3 random food, also possible in pawn-shop stock and through noncursed acquirement. Blessed acquirement permits selecting the type. Normal generation leaves the tablet unblessed. The small gray tablet appearance is shared with stimtabs, nutritabs and immunotabs.[2]
Description
The mana effect is a direct assignment, not an addition and not a multiplication of your remaining mana. For example, at Power 12 and level 4, it sets mana to 120 whether you previously had 0, 60 or 150. The last case therefore loses mana. Blessing and cursing do not change the formula, and repeated tablets at the same Power and level keep setting the same amount.[3]
Current Power matters: a reduced Power gives a smaller refill. The formula is also not simply twice whatever maximum happens to be displayed after another special effect. Eat consumes one tablet; the effect does not itself identify the powtab type for other copies.[4]
Strategy
Save powtabs for substantial mana expenditure away from a convenient refill. The benefit grows with Power and level, while carrying weight stays at one. Restore a reduced Power first when that is practical, and avoid overwriting a larger reserve obtained through a stronger effect.
Unlike stimtabs, powtabs do not trade away Constitution. Unlike nutritabs, they cannot rescue a starving character through nourishment. Establish which gray tablet you have before relying on either role.
