Healing is a spell that immediately restores hit points and removes blindness. It can leave a small reserve above your normal maximum, but does not increase that maximum permanently.[1]
Learning
Athena and Druid followers learn healing at Acolyte rank, requiring 400 priesthood XP. Odin teaches it at Priest rank, at 1,500 priesthood XP. Each promotion also requires the preceding rank and the faith's alignment condition.[2]
The spell also belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
The initial base cost is 15 mana. If current HP is below maximum HP + 3, healing rolls 1–30 HP. If the resulting HP exceeds your normal maximum, it is set to maximum HP + 3. Existing HP at or above that reserve is preserved. Blindness is removed even when no HP can be gained.[1]
This produces some unusual boundaries. With a maximum of 50 HP, going from 20 to 35 is an ordinary heal; any roll that takes you above 50 instead leaves you at 53. Casting at exactly 50 HP also leaves 53. The extra three points are current health, not a permanent improvement.
Healing does not cure disease, remove poison, or restore reduced attributes. Those problems call for curing or restoration. Regeneration supplies gradual recovery with an additional mana cost for each point healed.[4]
Strategy
Use healing when immediate HP matters, but leave room for its random result: a single cast can heal only one point. It is also cheaper than curing when blindness is your only ailment. Persistent poison still needs treatment, or it will consume the health you just recovered.
The spell provides repeatable recovery without consuming bottles. Keep a healing potion or another escape resource for situations in which mana is exhausted or fear prevents casting. The small above-maximum reserve can help before a fight, but repeated casting cannot build it higher.[5]
