True sight is a spell that lets you see invisible creatures within ordinary vision and counter certain deceptive monster effects. It does not survey distant terrain or remove existing blindness.[1]
Learning
Odin teaches true sight at Acolyte rank, requiring 400 priesthood XP, the preceding rank and suitable alignment. The same promotion teaches ball lightning.[2]
The spell also belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
A cast costs an initial 20 mana and adds 1–10 ten-minute status updates of true sight. The random duration is governed by the shared timing rules; repeated casts extend it.[1][4]
Invisible monsters can be drawn and identified by examination when otherwise visible. True sight also prevents the lost-action branch of the invisible-surprise special attack. When a monster's illusion-changing routine next runs, true sight makes it restore the creature's real name and symbol. The blackout-spore attack does not add blindness while true sight is active, though its separate darkness effect can still occur.[5]
These are specific protections. Casting true sight does not clear blindness already present, reveal the entire map, or perform the remote terrain survey of clairvoyance.[6]
Strategy
Use true sight when you need to keep observing an invisible opponent, rather than merely locating monsters once. Monster detection costs less initially and can locate creatures beyond normal sight, but its display is temporary and may show a disguised symbol.
If you are already blinded, use healing or curing first. Prepare true sight before approaching a known invisible ambusher, since casting after losing an action cannot recover that opportunity.
