Clairvoyance is a spell for surveying distant terrain on the current local map. It reveals an area around a chosen square, including concealed passages, without requiring you to walk there.[1]
Learning
Druids learn clairvoyance when promoted from Acolyte to Priest at 1,500 priesthood XP, subject to the faith's alignment requirement. The same promotion teaches alertness and disrupt, as well as the common priestly spell sanctification.[2]
It also belongs to the common random research pool, can be selected by a Knowledge wish, and is among the spells taught by identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
At an initial cost of 10 mana, choose a center with the targeting cursor. The spell surveys ten squares in each horizontal and vertical direction, up to 21 by 21 squares, clipped by the map edges. Walls and distance from the caster do not limit the survey. This equals the area of a +1-blessed scroll of clairvoyance; an uncursed scroll covers only 11 by 11.[4]
The surveyed squares lose their concealment and are drawn into map memory. This persists after the initial display, unlike the temporary overlays of monster detection and object detection. The survey draws terrain and normally visible ground-object symbols, not a remote display of creatures. Hidden traps are not converted into revealed trap symbols, nor are hazards removed.[5]
Cancel unwanted casting at the spell-selection prompt. In this version, Escape at the later targeting prompt still leaves the effect running: source inspection shows it surveying a clipped area near the map's upper-left corner, with the mana already spent. This cancellation behavior has not been checked through gameplay.[6]
Strategy
Survey a destination before committing to an unknown corridor or a guarded objective. Center the area beyond the terrain you already know to make better use of its fixed coverage. Seeing the route does not make its creatures or traps harmless; combine the spell with monster detection and careful searching when those are the actual threats.
Once learned, the spell saves scrolls on repeated surveys. At ten initial mana it is still more expensive than either detection spell, so use the cheaper option when you only need the location of monsters or loot. Repeated surveying of unchanged terrain adds no further protection.
