Heroism is a spell that temporarily improves hit, damage, defense and speed. Despite its name, it does not cure fear or grant fear immunity.[1]
Learning
Heroism has several fixed teaching routes. Priesthood promotions require the preceding rank and suitable alignment; the high-priesthood route also requires surpassing the incumbent and completing its task.[2]
| Organization | Teaching rank or requirement |
|---|---|
| Legion | Colonel, from Force-Leader at 4,000 guild XP |
| Order of Paladins | Paladin, from Chevalier at 4,000 guild XP and alignment at least +200 |
| Odin | Priest, 1,500 priesthood XP |
| Athena | Senior Priest, 4,000 priesthood XP |
| Druidism | High Priest |
The martial rewards are taught during promotion.[3] Heroism also belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[4]
Effects
The initial cost is 20 mana. A cast adds 1–5 ten-minute status updates of heroism and immediately recalculates combat statistics. While active, the effect adds your current Dexterity to hit, Strength to damage, and Agility to defense. It also halves the calculated action delay after burden has been applied, rounding down, before the final 1–25 limit and mounted override. It does not raise the attributes themselves.[1]
Recasting adds duration, not another copy of these bonuses. Heroism can combine with haste, subject to the final speed limit. Fixed-time actions such as casting, reading and drinking do not become proportionately faster.[5]
Fear still blocks melee and spellcasting. Heroism neither clears existing fear nor changes the immunity check against a demon's fear attack.[6]
Strategy
Prepare heroism before entering a dangerous melee. Its benefit grows with your physical attributes, and the combined offensive, defensive and speed effects make it broader than a simple hit bonus. Restore damaged attributes first when practical.
Do not wait until already frightened: fear can prevent the cast itself. A scroll of heroism is an alternative resource with different duration parameters. Learning heroism through a martial promotion gives a predictable combat option even without joining a magical guild.
