Haste is a spell intended to speed up movement and other speed-dependent actions. In Omega 0.90.4 the casting effect does not immediately refresh the character's calculated speed, so its message alone is not evidence that you are acting faster.[1]
Learning
Haste belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[2]
Effects
The initial cost is 15 mana. Casting clears slowing and adds 0–249 minute-status updates of haste. Zero is possible. Recasting adds duration even if the message says that nothing much happens. The timer is consumed independently of whether the speed benefit has been refreshed.[1][3]
When combat statistics are recalculated, active haste halves the base action-delay value before burden and later modifiers, rounding down. The final delay is limited to 1–25; smaller values are faster. Riding subsequently fixes it at 3. Movement and other speed-scaled commands benefit, but casting remains 12 ticks, drinking 10, and reading 20.[4]
Refresh limitation: the spell sets the status without recalculating speed. A later combat-stat refresh is needed before newly gained haste, or the removal of slowing, changes the calculated delay. Source inspection shows that the drop command performs such a refresh even when its item prompt is cancelled. This workaround has not been checked through gameplay.[5]
Strategy
Prepare haste before danger, allow for a zero-duration roll, and check the actual combat-speed display after a refresh. Repeated casting cannot increase its speed multiplier, and excessive burden can absorb much of its practical benefit.
Heroism recalculates combat statistics immediately and supplies its own speed modifier as well as hit, damage and defense bonuses. A potion of speed can have a longer blessed duration, but its own immediate refresh depends on inventory handling; consult that page before treating it as a guaranteed instant alternative.
