An aggravator fungus is a stationary monster that can wake and anger the creatures on its level. Its ordinary form is peaceful, so leaving it alone avoids the trigger.[2]
Generation
Aggravator fungi belong to ordinary random pools and are specifically placed by the sewer population routine. They have no ordinary starting possessions.[3]
Aggravation
The fungus has no movement or melee attacks. If it becomes hostile, an eligible special action makes an irritating hum and sets every monster in the current level's monster list awake and hostile. It then clears its own hostility. Merely approaching a normal peaceful fungus does not satisfy this condition.[4]
The ordinary special check requires it to be awake, alive and within four squares, and succeeds on half of its pulses. Sanctuary suppresses the special action. The fungus is immune to fire, but has no other innate immunity.[5]
Remains
Normal death has a 50% chance of leaving spores. These provide only one food point when eaten and have no alchemical transformation. Eating the spores does not itself call the live creature's aggravation ability.[6]
Strategy
Do not injure a peaceful fungus casually while exploring a populated level. A surviving hostile fungus can turn nearby peaceful inhabitants into enemies and wake distant creatures as well. If you must remove it, use an attack capable of dealing with its 12 HP promptly; fire is ineffective. Its one-point meal is a poor reason to risk aggravating an entire level.
