A badger is a normally peaceful animal, displayed as a brown b. It can swim and leaves edible badger ribs, but is more capable of retaliation than a rabbit.[2]
Generation
Badgers occur in ordinary random-monster pools and are explicitly included in forest encounters on LOCUS. Their ordinary generation gives them no possessions.[3]
Behavior and remains
A badger starts peaceful. If it becomes hostile, it pursues the player and attempts two low physical attacks when adjacent, without a defensive action. It can follow across water. At one or two HP, its next normal pursuit movement triggers retreat and reduces its base action interval from four to two ticks; a creature beside you can still fight before such movement occurs.[4]
The badger has no innate damage immunity or special attack. It is not initially hungry, so offering ordinary food does not provide the feeding-based pacification available for a wolf. Its ribs have a 50% chance to appear on normal death, add six food-reserve points when eaten, and have no alchemical transformation. Normal hourly hunger checks consume one food point.[5]
Strategy
Leave an unneeded peaceful badger alone when injured: two small attacks can be more costly than a single one, and even a zero raw roll causes one HP on a successful non-immune physical hit. Its low-directed attacks matter when selecting a defensive sequence. The ribs provide no more food than easier prey such as a rabbit, and a pond is not a reliable escape barrier against a provoked badger.[6]
