A bandersnatch is a fast, sleep-immune predator and a fixed opponent in the Arena. Its three attacks make its modest health a poor guide to the danger of remaining adjacent.[2]
Generation
Bandersnatches can appear in ordinary random encounters. They have no possessions at ordinary generation. In the fixed Arena sequence, a bandersnatch follows the spectre and precedes the lich.[3]
| Form | HP | Hit | Raw damage per attack | Remains |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | 100 | 20 | 0–49 | 50% on normal death |
| Arena | 160 | 40 | 0–74 | Guaranteed on normal death |
The Arena opponent has the same three attacks and one defense, but enhanced health, accuracy and damage. Its movement interval remains 2.[4]
Description
The bandersnatch moves with an erratic fluttering pattern, without flight or intangibility. It has three physical attacks at randomly selected heights and one defense. Sleep is its only innate immunity. It has no ranged attack, special attack, food response or greedy gift response.[5]
Its hide is inedible and has no alchemical transformation. Ordinary death can leave a hide even though the creature carries no treasure.[6]
Strategy
Avoid relying on sleep to stop its rapid attacks. Physical damage and elemental attacks are available alternatives, since the bandersnatch lacks their corresponding immunities. Its lack of ranged offense makes distance useful, but its speed and irregular movement make a close retreat less predictable. The Arena specimen hits substantially harder than the ordinary creature.
Trivia
The name also appears in Lewis Carroll's poem Jabberwocky, alongside the Jabberwock. The poem supplies a literary parallel for the name, not the Omega creature's combat statistics.[7]
