A blank scroll is an inert member of the scroll family. Its random inscription does not reveal that it is blank: the name describes its lack of magical effect, rather than a reliably recognizable piece of paper.[1]
Generation
Blank scrolls enter the ordinary random-scroll pool at item level 0 and can appear in the pawn shop. Acquirement can also produce one, although selecting it deliberately spends a much more valuable resource. See Scroll for the conditional generation probabilities.[2][3][4][5]
Description
Reading consumes one scroll without an effect or automatic type identification. Blessing and enchantment do not give it a spell. A cursed copy has the unusual identified name Antinomy!, but remains inert.
Acquirement and wishing scrolls are replaced with a blank-scroll object during their use, then removed by the reading command. This is not a normal source of reusable writing material. In particular, using one from a stack can replace the entire stack before the final removal; separate valuable copies before reading them.[6][7]
Strategy
A known blank scroll has little value beyond its small sale price. It is not a substitute for a scroll of spells, and the normal Omega commands provide no scroll-writing operation that would turn it into a chosen magic scroll. Carry emergency scrolls in preference to blank paper when accessible inventory slots are scarce.
An unknown scroll doing nothing does not uniquely identify blank paper. A hint sheet produces a message, but cursed alertness, a failed environmental effect, or an unsuitable target can also leave no useful magic behind. Use identification to settle the type rather than treating a single uneventful reading as proof.
