A bolt is ammunition for a crossbow. It can be thrown without one, but that loses both the loaded launcher's damage contribution and the throwing Strength bonus.[1]
Generation
Bolts occur in random treasure, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. The weapon constructor produces 1-20 bolts with a shared random blessing and enchantment. Item level is 1 and base value is 5 Au per bolt; Julie's does not sell them.[2]
Loading and shooting
With a crossbow in the weapon hand, select an accessible bolt using Fire/Throw. If the crossbow is unloaded, this prepares it without consuming the bolt. Select a bolt again to fire the loaded weapon. A fired bolt is removed from the carried stack whether it hits or misses.[3]
A landed shot uses current character damage + 3 + bolt enchantment + twice the Strength modifier and clears the crossbow's loaded state. A miss leaves the crossbow loaded. The bolt has a 25% destruction chance after a successful hit; otherwise it normally lands for recovery. Loading itself neither reserves nor removes a particular bolt.[4]
Without a loaded crossbow, the bolt's attack uses only 3 + bolt enchantment, even if the character is strong or holds a longbow. Both forms deal physical damage. Its zero base hit rating is not a zero hit chance: firing tests current character hit instead. See Shooting and throwing for the full formulas.[5]
Strategy
Pair bolts with a correctly wielded, loaded crossbow. As improvised hand-thrown ammunition they are notably weaker than arrows under the same positive Strength bonus. Keep a supply accessible before combat so that the extra loading action is not compounded by unpacking ammunition.[6]
Reclaim missed bolts when the area is safe. A miss loses no bolt to the hit-only destruction roll, but recovering one beside a live opponent may cost more than preserving its value. Enchantment adds to damage; it does not independently improve the shot's accuracy. A carried cursed bolt can still be fired, while one equipped and stuck in use cannot be discarded that way.[7]
