Boots of levitation are boots that sustain floating above many local ground hazards when worn noncursed. Cursed boots keep the same name but become extremely heavy instead of granting levitation.[1]

Generation

They are repeatable item-level-3 boots in random generation and monster possessions, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary pairs start at +0 and weight 30, with the usual blessing roll and shuffled footwear appearance. Their equip effect records the type as known.[2]

Floating and burden

Noncursed boots add enough levitation to stay above the ordinary countdown threshold. The local movement dispatcher then skips many ground effects, including ordinary water, lava, hedges, rubble and traps. It still runs ordinary services and other location functions that lie outside that ground-hazard group.[3]

Situation Limit
Walking while levitating Many ground-hazard entry effects are skipped
Mounted movement The mount causes location effects to run despite the rider's levitation
Deliberate location activation with @ Runs the location effect despite levitation
Monster attacks or other direct damage Not stopped merely because the character is floating

Levitation also bypasses the over-capacity refusal check for ordinary local and world-map movement. It does not remove the carried weight or all delay penalties, and the jumping command still has its own burden restriction.[4]

A cursed pair instead changes its own weight to 1,000. It does not clear levitation obtained elsewhere, so a still-floating wearer may nevertheless acquire a large load. Removing that cursed burden effect sets the boots' weight to 1, rather than restoring their original 30; curse-changing effects can therefore leave an altered item weight. Ordinary cursed-equipment removal remains blocked until the curse is resolved.[5]

Removal and strategy

There is an asymmetry in the levitation duration: equipping adds 1,400 status units, but removing subtracts 1,500 and clamps at zero. If you had another finite levitation effect, one wear/remove cycle can consume an additional 100 ten-minute status updates of its reservoir. A pair worn alone still normally sustains levitation; the problem matters when switching boots and expecting a potion's previous duration to remain intact. This is a static-source finding, not a measured in-game timer.[6]

Use these boots for local terrain where the floating check applies, and change to speed or heroism when combat benefits matter more. A levitation potion can free the Boots slot temporarily, but account for the removal asymmetry before swapping over a hazard. Dismount before relying on levitation to bypass ground effects.

Extra enchantment and stronger positive blessing do not improve the floating power. Establish curse state before wearing an unknown pair; their beneficial-sounding name does not distinguish the heavy cursed form.
