A broad sword is a one-handed cutting weapon. It offers a substantial damage increase over a short sword while remaining lighter and more accurate than a battle-axe. The same unidentified name can also conceal a vorpal sword; the ordinary weapon has no decapitation power.[1]

Generation

Julie's sells a fully identified, uncursed +0 broad sword for 180 Au. It is part of the fixed stock, with no character-level requirement. The shop opens from 07:00 to 20:59, excluding the entire noon hour.[2]

It can also appear in random treasure, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Item level 2 affects random-generation acceptance, not who may wield it. Randomly made copies can be blessed, uncursed or cursed; buying Julie's known copy avoids that uncertainty.[3]

Description

Its normal selected attack is a cut, which adds a Strength-based damage bonus. Wielding adds the weapon's hit and damage ratings, plus its enchantment, to the character's combat values. These are contributions to attack rolls, not a 9% hit chance or a fixed 12 damage. A lunge is also available; saved tactics persist through weapon changes.[4]

The ordinary blade inflicts normal physical damage. Blessing or high enchantment does not give it the vorpal weapon's special attack or bypass physical immunity. Identify an unknown broad sword before deciding which weapon you have.[5]

It can be thrown or used to tunnel through suitable walls. Ordinary throwing uses the character's current combat values, so a spare broad sword's printed damage does not independently determine its throw. Cutting weapons can suffer tunneling damage; a striking weapon is a safer digging implement. See throwing and tunneling.[6]

Strategy

For a character who already hits reliably, this is a reasonably priced improvement over a short sword: at equal enchantment it adds four damage points while losing two points of accuracy. If accuracy is the problem, increasing raw damage may not solve it; an epee or the short sword you already own can remain useful.

Compared with a battle-axe, it has the same damage rating, one more point of accuracy, ten less weight and a 20 Au lower shop price. A mace is cheaper still and safer for tunneling, but is heavier and one point of accuracy less accurate. A found enchanted axe or mace can reverse the comparison; compare the actual copies, not only their names.[7]
