Buckler is a very light shield with the smallest base defense bonus. In the infobox, p is the individual shield's enchantment.[1]
Generation
Buckler can be found among randomly generated treasure, including the random possessions of treasure-bearing monsters, and may appear in Knight's Pawn Shop. A noncursed acquirement effect can create shields; a blessed effect lets you select this type, but the resulting item's blessing and enchantment still follow its own generation rules.[2][3][4][5]
It is not part of Julie's fixed stock.[6]
Description
In the Shield slot, it adds 1 + enchantment to defense. It does not add normal-damage absorption or require a matching block to supply that bonus. You can use a shield alongside a two-handed weapon in 0.90.4 because the Shield slot is separate from both hand slots. Its weight still counts toward burden.[7][8][9]
The shield has no additional worn magical power. Its name reveals the type, but not a random copy's enchantment or curse. Negative enchantment reduces its bonus and can make the net contribution negative; a cursed shield cannot be normally swapped out once in use. Use identification before trying an uncertain find.[10][11][12][13]
Strategy
A noncursed buckler is a cheap-weight way to add defense when you have no shield. At equal enchantment, a small round shield gains only one defense for another 20 weight, while plasteel keeps the buckler's weight and provides six more defense. Do not assume any buckler is an improvement: a cursed -1 copy has zero net defense, and more negative copies lower it.
Compare all shields and defense, absorption and tactical blocking before treating a higher base bonus as an automatic upgrade.
